Sagging breasts may emerge due to various reasons. Ligaments holding the breast tissue in place may loosen in time. A lack of harmony between the breast tissue and the surrounding skin envelope may develop due to weight changes, breastfeeding and gravity effect. The problem may concern the breast tissue, skin or both. The result is a hollow-looking, sagging breast.

As it is the case in other breast operations, you should discuss with your surgeon why you consider to undergo such an operation and your expected result from the operation. You should inform your physician if you or your family members have a history of breast disease or breast cancer, smoking, drug habituation or systemic disease. You should also consult with and get information from your surgeon regarding the type of surgery as well as possible issues.

In breast lift surgery, the sagging breast tissue is reshaped and the excessive skin is removed. The areola is carried to the place where it should be. The operation is performed under general anaesthesia in an operating room at a hospital. The operation takes 1.5 to 2 hours. Scars of various shapes may be left in accordance with the degree of sagging. No matter which method is employed, there will definitely be a scar around the areola. If a periareolar incision is preferred during the breast lift operation, the scar around the areola may be more visible. In other breast lift operations, a 4.5 to 5-cm scar around the areola that goes from the mid lower portion of the areola downwards may be left in addition to the scar around the areola. In eligible patients, sagging may be eliminated by only inserting a breast implant. In such a case, the surgical scar is only hidden at and limited to the point where the areola and the white skin of the breast meets. There is no breast lift operation that does not leave a scar. However, these scars are initially visible but then become indistinct.

Post-op period is usually comfortable. Pain is usually not a problem. Movements of the upper limb may be restricted for a couple of days if a breast implant is used during surgery. A bra-like dressing is applied on the breasts. A separate dressing is placed on the areola. The dressing is opened 2 days later to check the wound. 7 days later, all dressing will be removed. Sutures are removed 7 to 10 days later. The patient wears a sports bra for 6 weeks. Massage is recommended. There may be initial swelling after the operation in addition to areolar numbness and a purplish color change on the breast skin. These will heal shortly.

Return to normal life
The patient may go back to work in 3 or 4 days. Avoiding intensive exercise is recommended for 3 weeks. Breast lift surgery generally produces good and permanent results, fixes the mental health of the patient and her partner and makes them livelier. The newly-shaped breast reflects a long-term stability but weight changes, pregnancy, breastfeeding and gravity may cause sagging again.

Possible operational complications
All operations may produce some undesired results. You should discuss such possibilities with your physician.
