Ears complete the looks of a face and emerge as an important element influencing the overall looks of a person. Ear deformities may be congenital or due to the enlargement of the ear hole as well as the laceration of the earlobe owing to the use of earrings or due to a sagging of the earlobe with advanced age.

In order to prevent psychological disorders specifically in children, it is recommended that deformities are corrected with surgery after the ages of 5 or 6 when the development of ear tissues is almost complete.

Otoplasty can be divided into 2 major headings. The first one is the repair of prominent ears (bat ears). The development of ear tissues is almost complete at age 4 to 5. Therefore, any aesthetic surgery on ears can be performed from this age on. It is important to correct prominent ear deformity before a school-age child starts school and is then bothered by the disturbing comments of his friends, adversely affecting his psychology.

Otherwise, there is no harm in undergoing this operation at later ages. The procedure can be performed under local or general anaesthesia. An incision behind the ear is the starting point for the procedure and the scar is hidden in this area. The ear’s angle with the head is corrected by placing sutures from inside the cartilages. Furthermore, the ear curve is formed by shaping the cartilages.

During recovery, dressing is applied for 3 or 4 days and then ears are not covered any more. The edema goes off within a week or ten days and the patient resumes normal life activities within a couple of days after the operation.

On the other hand, people with large ears compared to their facial proportions are given an ear reduction surgery. Performed under local anaesthesia, this operation is mainly performed in adults. Ears may look larger due to sagging earlobes with advanced age. In this case, the sagging can be eliminated through an intervention solely on the earlobe.

Double Helical Rim Advancement Flaps method developed by Prof. Erdem Tezel is the most practical and least scarred option. This method sees most of the scars hidden inside the helix of the external ear. Sutures are removed one week after the operation.

Moreover, it is possible to repair badly pierced ears, excessively enlarged ear holes or lacerated earlobes with just a small intervention.
